The Process
After careful hand-harvest, grapes are sorted at the winery with a cutting-edge digital optical sorting machine that uses lasers and sensors allowing only the finest fruit to reach our fermentation tanks. The gentle, precision winemaking methods of our team—optical sorting, cold soaking, 100% gravity-flow winemaking, and more—are tailored to bring out the best expression of varietal and vintage from every vineyard block. Our Harebrained Cabernet Sauvignon matures in carefully selected French oak barrels.
The Napa Valley
We are fortunate to partner with over 70 winegrowers throughout Napa. These vineyards, coupled with our seven Estate Vineyards represent some of the most coveted vinicultural sites and appellations ranging from Atlas Peak to Diamond Mountain. This array of premier fruit gives our team ultimate flexibility and a range of diverse wines to encapsulate the essence of Napa Valley.
The Vintage
The 2023 growing season was all about patience. A very long, wet winter replenished the soils and filled our reservoirs. Cooler spring weather delayed budbreak and the start of the growing season by several weeks. Late spring saw moderate warmth and led to substantial canopy growth, as well as a healthy crop load on the vines. Mild, warm tempertures created perfect ripening conditions throughout the summer and early fall. The longer hang time allowed the fruit to reach optimum ripeness, and resulted in a superb vintage that is fresh and full of flavor with great balance and fruit density.
“My only regret in life is that I did not
drink more wine.”
